Stephanie Hamel

I don’t have a snazzy nickname like everyone else at the zoo so I just go by Steph. Almost every job that I’ve held has had some form of teaching element to it and as luck would have it, for the zoo, I get to teach about a topic I love: reptiles. As a child, I dreamed about having a pet dragon (the kind that breaths fire and has wings) and at the zoo, I get to work with the closest thing we have in this world. I also love most things creepy and crawly; my science degree let me explore Parasitology (like bloodsucking leeches and tapeworms), Entomology (like ants, flies, and beetles), and Bacteriology (like flesh-eating disease and food poisoning). Working at Little Ray’s allows me to put my educational backgrounds in Science and Education to good use. In my spare time, I read voraciously, do home renovations and landscaping, and go to see movies. I am Canadian, yet my favourite sport is not hockey (!) but rather rugby, which I played for nine years. I also belly dance and scuba dive. I dabble in the arts from pottery to totem pole carving to blacksmithing. I have a pet snake name Lil Pete and I am currently trying to convince my husband to let me get a Tegu.
